The Health Quality and Evaluation Agency of Catalonia has issued an alert to provide advance information about the completion of a consultation open to the market to find out whether Artificial Intelligence-based solutions to support the process of Diabetic Retinopathy, integrated and interoperable in the field of primary care in Catalonia’s comprehensive health system for public use (SISCAT), are already available in the market or can be developed.

The main, but not only, objectives of these solutions are: to determine the risk of diabetic patients suffering from Diabetic Retinopathy and, if that is the case, to determine the eye injury and the degree of injury of the patients, through access to a clinical dataset and analysis of medical images (retinographies).

The main benefits sought through the future implementation of these solutions are: improving current screenings, increasing population coverage and customising the intervals between tests according to patients’ risks; reducing consultations with the ophthalmologist to resolve doubtful cases; detecting the number of serious injuries in advance; reducing the number of treatments related to such prevented injuries; and avoiding unnecessary visits to health centres.

The information and conditions that will apply to this market consultation are expected to be available in the AQuAS contractor profile announcement in early December 2022.

Health/AI Programme Challenge

The alert published is part of the first challenge raised within the framework of the Health/AI programme. The aim of these challenges is to assess Artificial Intelligence solutions that help solve specific problems in the field of health care. The challenges take the form of a public open call for projects. The selected projects will undergo a thorough evaluation process to select the best proposal to implement in the Catalan Health System.

The project is also part of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR) – Funded by the European Union – NextGenerationEU.
